A mid-night thought
The way I see book writing is the way I see people and personalities. I try to write my stories with heart, humour and struggle. In our younger years, we are all heart and humour. But as you get older, people, family, friends and life begin to add more and more struggle. If you are not careful, that balance will tip too far. The humour starts to turn into seriousness and the heart you once had turns slowly into fear.
That’s why I think writing and reading to children matters. It reflects that earlier balance and reminds us adults of life before things became too heavy and stops us from piling struggles on to our children. In a way, children’s stories and childhood itself are very similar. They both hold onto something simple, honest and full of life that we slowly lose if we are not paying attention.
